History

Marshall Square Park is the oldest park in the borough. The park was originally used as a water basin
because the land is located on the highest point of the borough. After the water basin was no longer large enough, the land was designated as a public park. When the land became a public park, 3 local botanists decided this would be a good location for rare trees. Some of the original trees that were planted by botanists can still be found in the park.

In July 1886, the 97th regiment of the military raised $5,000 after they fought in the Civil War. A monument was erected in their honor at the highest point in West Chester, on the former site of the original water basin.

In 1889, after many years of misuse, the community started to become more involved with the way the park looked. One of the ways the community tried to refurbish the park was by developing a zoo. The zoo consisted of animals that are now consistent with Pennsylvania wildlife. Today, many people are drawn to the park by its natural beauty.
