The 2020 census: Why it's important and how it can help
The 2020 Census counts every person living in the 50 states, District of Columbia, and five U.S. territories. It doesn’t care if you are a citizen or not. There is no question about citizenship. You just have to be living here. The count is required by the U.S. Constitution and conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau.
Early in 2020, every home will receive an invitation to fill out a short census questionnaire. You can respond online, by phone, or by mail. Your response is completely confidential. No one has access to your specific information. So you can feel safe about responding.
why the census is important
The census gathers critical data about the entire U.S. population. This data is used to determine the services, products, and support you and your community receive from the government. Every year, billions of dollars in federal funding go to hospitals, fire departments, schools, roads, Medicaid, CHIP, and other important resources—all based on census data.
The results of the census also determine the number of representatives each state will have in the U.S. Congress. Census information is also used to determine the boundaries of federal and state voting districts
A complete and accurate count is critical for you and your community, because the results of the 2020 Census will affect our community funding, congressional representation, and more.
